2007-2008 Scholarship Winners
MENTOR OHIO—April 20, 2008 The Mentor
Woman’s Club is pleased to announce the winners of the Mentor Woman’s Club
Scholarship (for education beyond high school), The Hawk Family Scholarship
(medical studies), and the 7th grade Essay Contest. Two Mentor
High School students each won $1,250 scholarships to be applied towards
admission to the college of their choice. The winners are: Heather Ann Helsel
who plans to pursue a career in Pharmacy at the University of Findlay (OH) and
Nicolette M. Nichols who plans to pursue a career in International Business and
Equestrian Studies at Ohio Northern University. Ten
seventh-graders from the Mentor School System were chosen as winners in the
essay contest writing on the theme “Why I’m Proud to be an American.” From St.
Gabriel School--Leah Myers, Natalie Dell, Meghan Olexa, Mariah Salloum, Brandon
Slaght and Rachel Uday; Ridge Junior High--Sarah Murphy and Drew Tobin; Shore
Junior High--Danielle McCarthy; and Memorial Junior High--Michelle Crough. All
received $50.00 savings bonds and certificates. The Hawk
Family Scholarship is awarded to a college student who has completed two years
of college, is majoring in a medically related field and is a graduate of any
school in the Mentor School district. This year’s winner of $1,000 is Melissa
Sherman, a 1986 graduate of Mentor High School. After graduating from Ohio
State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1990, Melissa dedicated herself
to social work. For the last two years she has attended Lakeland Community
College to attain her degree in Psychiatric Nursing and plans to graduate in
2009. Thomas
Hawk, recipient of the first Mentor Woman’s Club Scholarship, and his wife
attended this year’s award event and presented a $500 check for the Hawk
Scholarship Fund. Dr. Hawk became a Neurosurgeon and has practiced for many
years at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. When the Mentor
Woman’s Club celebrated their 50th anniversary in 1989, Tom and his
wife attended and presented the club with a check for $1,000 to show his
gratitude for the Club Scholarship crediting that scholarship for starting his
own career. During that dinner, he heard of the many projects undertaken by the
Club and presented an additional check for $5,000 to establish the Hawk
Scholarship Fund.
